How Was Lake George, New York Formed?

Lake George, known as the Queen of American Lakes, is a 32-mile long lake in northern New York. A popular summer tourist destination, Lake George was formed naturally billions of years ago.

    History

A shallow sea covered the Lake George and Adirondack Mountain region 1.3 billion years before present, according to the Lake George Association. Over the next few million years, continental plate activity caused faults to form in the region.
    Significance

At first, these faults created the two rivers that would become Lake George, one that flowed south into the Hudson River and one that flowed north into Lake Champlain.
    Time Frame

An ice age then covered the region with glaciers. Between 10,000 to 12,000 years ago, the glaciers receded, eroding away the separation between the rivers and forming the Lake George basin.
